4 Min. Lesezeit

A loud roar and growl to all the gay tribes out there, because on 27 February it was again “World Bear Day”. In fact, this means real bears from the wild. But don’t worry; we’re not talking about boring polar, ice or brown bears, but about hairy, hot guys who fall under the category of gay bears.

Because the #Bear is at the top of the popularity scale among gays, and rightly so! What is the Gay Bear, and what makes him so irresistible? Find out here!

Gay-Bear: Why we love him so much

You always pine for that broad-shouldered guy with intense chest hair and an untrimmed beard at the club? The more body hair, the better? Congratulations, you seem to have fallen into the trap. Or to be more precise, you seem to be an admirer or a chaser – in other words, someone who is sexually attracted to bears.

Because what you are looking at with dirty fantasies and pressure in your pants is a typical bear. In the gay scene, this has been used for years to describe guys who visually resemble men of the wild. They are rough, tomboyish, passionate – there are quite a few attributes attributed to the Bärs of the scene.

What sets them apart is the sturdy physique and strong body hair that they wear with pride and display at every opportunity. Their masculine and animalistic charisma is regularly the basis for all kinds of dirty fantasies and sexual pleasures. With a #Bear, pretty much every hot sex adventure is imaginable and definitely uninhibited!

The Bear Community – how the #Bear became a sex symbol

When Baloo the Bear scrubs himself on the palm tree and tries his hand at “commonality”, he has nothing at all in common with the #Bears from the scene. So that is not where the name comes from. In fact, the #Bears movement emerged one day between the 70s and 80s, with its origins in San Francisco.

People have always been great at classifying others, and so all hairy gays were quickly made into bears. Attempts were made to develop subgenera: Only big hairy men were supposed to be bears, later also gays with bald heads and broad bodies. Today, the modern gay #Bear would most likely be associated with a nature boy.

At the same time (70s and 80s), the bear-movement began to draw attention to itself with events. So-called “bear-hug parties” were the first step towards recognition. The typical mainstream gay had competition and was recognised. The aim was to provide a dating platform by and with gay men and to gain recognition.

From San Francisco, bear-life quickly spread to other countries, and today it is impossible to imagine the #GayTribes without bears. By the way: The Bear now has its own flag! It was developed in 1995 and is still proudly used today. Striped in natural colours (Bear fur), with a teasing Bärentatze, it stands for the pride in the bear existence!

Are you a Bear? The gay definitions

Too little hair to be a whole Bear? Too young, too thin, too athletic? Getting the #Bear is not so easy in the gay scene. But you don’t have to miss out on animal fun even if you’re not part of the gay scene. Related types include:

  • The Wolf: Bears are not very muscular. If you are a Bear-type with a lot of hair and bulky muscles, you may be categorised as a wolf. In some groups, wolves are also considered sexually dominant and even aggressive. The boundary between wolf and wolf is gradually disappearing.
  • The Otter: Athletic, slim guys with plenty of body hair are hot, but does that make them bears? Not if (some parts of) the scene have their way. Here, they rather belong to the group of otters!
  • The Puppy/Cub: The road to bears is rocky, and especially young aspirant (under 30) are often called Cubs or Puppies. However, the classification also applies to actually beary types, whose body size is smaller.
  • The Panda: Pandas belong to the Bears, also in the gay scene. What is meant here are hot Bear types who are of Asian descent.
  • The transbear: Transmasculine men who are not only broad, tall and hairy, but also gay, are called transbears. However, the term is sometimes misused because it emphasises transsexuality too much. Many trans men wish to be referred to simply as “man”.
  • The Ice Cream Man: Sexy bears with white;-grey or plain white body and head hair are affectionately referred to as Ice Cream Men.

Hot stuff for real bear lovers

In the meantime, there are not only “Bear meetings” and “lovers parties”, but also a number of books, series and films about the bearscene. Well-known in the scene, for example, is the comic “Bear with Me”, which focuses on the bears’ life of Andy McCubbin. Almost all the actors are bears, which gives a deep insight into the scene.

You can see really hot guys in the films “BearCity 1 and 2” and “Cachorro”. And if you prefer reading to sitting in front of the TV, the Bear World magazine is probably just your thing. It has been published regularly (once a month) since 2012 and is still probably the most popular lifestyle magazine for all gays who belong to the Bear scene.

The Gay Bear makes us hot

Bearpornos, Bearmovies, Gay-Bear-Meetings – yes there are so some possibilities, the world of the #Bears a little closer look. Hot guys with lots of hair and an often pronounced instinct for sex are also the symbol of erotic ecstasy for many feminine gays. So it is no wonder that so many gay men are looking for a “real bear” on Grindr.
