What are flavours or poppers?

History

The collective term poppers colloquially refer to a group of nitrites that are mostly used as pleasure-enhancing scents in liquid form. Nitrites are the salts and esters of nitrous acid. They were first synthesised in the 1940s and 1950s. Amyl nitrite was used to treat angina pectoris, a narrowing of the coronary arteries. In the case of poppers, the effect of a substance was based, according to the view of the time, on the short-term widening of the coronary vessels to relieve angina pectoris symptoms.

Furthermore, nitrite compounds are suitable for vasodilatation and thus for lowering blood pressure. Because of the limited duration of action of nitrites, today’s medicine uses diluted nitroglycerine instead. However, it was precisely because of their limited duration of action that nitrites, especially butyl and isobutyl, were rediscovered as aphrodisiacs in the 1970s. Since then, they have been called poppers and are now important components of products known as ingredients in air fresheners or video head cleaners.

The name poppers is derived from the English verb “to pop”. This derives from the characteristic sound made when opening the original poppers vials.

In the beginning, the flavours were mainly used in the gay scene for sex. Today, however, they are also very popular with heterosexual couples.

Due to the fact that they are made from a variety of different materials, they are also very popular.

Because of their vasodilatory properties, many consumers of poppers experience a great increase in sensation and relaxation of the smooth muscles. Which leads to a higher pain tolerance, among other things. For this very reason, they are often used before and during anal sex practices.

The best known and cleanest strains are the RUSH®, Hardware®, Amsterdam, Quicksilver®, Jungle Juice, Ram®, Rave™, Manscent, Iron Horse, to name but a few.

Substance

Poppers is a collective term for volatile substances from the group of alkyl nitrites such as amyl nitrite, butyl nitrite, isoamyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite, pentyl or isobutyl nitrite. Since 2007, only flavourings with isopropyl nitrite as an ingredient may be imported into the EU.

The possession and use of isopropyl nitrite is currently legal in all countries in the EU!!! Poppers are not drugs! The UK government ruled on 22 March 2016 that poppers do not fall under the Psychoactive Substances Act and can therefore continue to be sold legally.

Due to their physiological effect, poppers were classified as functional medicines by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) in the past. A later decision of the European Court of Justice (ECJ, see below) in 2014 overturned the classification of poppers as functional medicines. It is now no longer applicable.

But to be on the safe side, please check your national legislation if you want to resell or give away isopropyl nitrite.

Poppers: effect on body and mind

Poppers and the effect on the body

The effect of poppers is strongly vasodilatory and spasmodic. The fact that poppers are called pleasure-enhancing substances is due to the excitatory and pain-inhibiting effect that is also attributed to the flavours. They are based on the abrupt expansion of the blood vessels described above. Subsequently, the arterioles (small blood vessels of the heart) relax. Which leads to a drop in blood pressure with an increased pulse. And to a temporary lack of oxygen in the brain. The drop in blood pressure lasts a maximum of 30 seconds. After about 2 minutes, the blood pressure returns to normal.
Popper’s effect: The increase in sensation and relaxation of the smooth muscles that occurs has, among other things, the following side effects …

  • … a higher pain tolerance
  • … the reduction of inhibitions
  • … an increase in pleasure during sex
  • … a feeling of intimacy
  • … a sensitisation of the sense of touch
  • … face and upper body sensation and a feeling of warmth
  • … a feeling of timelessness as well as a change in acoustic and visual perception (e.g. music is perceived as more voluminous and intense through the body)

The poppers effect leads to a higher pain tolerance. Which is why it is often used before and during anal sex practices. The intensity and duration of the desired sexual climax depends on the consistency of the scent. Of course, the exact effect of Poppers also depends on several factors. Such as mental and physical condition and blood pressure. The effect of Poppers depends on the consistency of the scent.

Poppers and the effect on the mind

Consumption of poppers can produce a high, with feelings of happiness. The high is experienced as deep muscle relaxation and insensitivity to pain, and leads to altered auditory and visual perception.

Poppers and their effects with other substances

Poppers: effects and basics

The risks of consuming several substances at the same time are higher than with mono-consumption; body and psyche are put under greater strain. The Poppers effect of the individual substances can be strengthened or weakened, and interactions can occur with a time delay. Completely unexpected effects are also possible as poppers effects.

Poppers: Effect with alcohol / cannabis
Poppers are often combined with alcohol and / or cannabis. The more alcohol / cannabis is consumed, the higher the already strong circulatory stress and dizziness and nausea can occur.

Poppers: Effect with sexual enhancers
The aromas must never be combined with Viagra, Cialis, Levitra or other sexual enhancers from the PDE-5 inhibitor series: There is a danger to life, as it can lead to a severe drop in blood pressure and even to cardiovascular arrest.

Poppers: effect with other aphrodisiacs (e.g. kava kava or damiana)
A severe cardiovascular stress is possible.

Poppers: effect with downer (example: heroin, ketamine, benzos, nitrous oxide)
The depressant effects of these substances are potentiated and there is an increased risk of unconsciousness, respiratory failure and coma.

Poppers: effect with stimulants (example: speed, crystal meth, cocaine)
dizziness, life-threatening cardiovascular stress possible!

Poppers: Effect with GHB / GBL / BDO
Due to the strong blood pressure lowering and respiratory depressant effect of this combination, coma-like deep sleep, unconsciousness and respiratory paralysis may occur. In case of overdose also with vomiting.

Poppers: effects of medication
If you are already taking medication for low blood pressure (hypotension), epilepsy, angina pectoris, cardiovascular or respiratory diseases, you should never consume substances that are inhaled. A combination of these substances can lead to a sudden and life-threatening drop in blood pressure. The use of nitrate-containing medicines such as NO donors (e.g. nitrolingual spray) is particularly risky.

Poppers effect: consider safer use

Applying the following safer use rules can help minimise risks when using flavours:

Do not use poppers if you have a history of cardiovascular problems, cardiac arrhythmia, valvular defects, a weakened heart muscle, brain damage or traumatic brain injury, dilated arteries (aneurysms) or if you are pregnant. The consequences can be life-threatening in some cases.
Poppers: Do not drink under any circumstances– Danger to life!

If poppers are accidentally drunk, drink water immediately. Never induce vomiting, as this may further injure the oesophagus and throat. Call an emergency doctor immediately. Avoid contact with skin, mucous membranes and eyes. If contact does occur, you should rinse the affected area with cold water for at least 20 minutes and consult a doctor to have any possible injuries treated!
For many users, the consumption of poppers has a sexually stimulating effect, and the risks of unprotected intercourse are no longer taken so seriously. Therefore, always put on a condom before using poppers! Poppers are highly flammable and the vapours explosive – so be careful when handling lighters, cigarettes, candles etc.
Effect: Never use during pregnancy and breastfeeding!

Poppers can be very harmful to the organism of unborn children or infants.

Poppers Effect: Final Tips!

At room temperature and in contact with the air, poppers lose their effect. For this reason, they are usually kept dark and tightly closed in the refrigerator. If moisture mixes with the nitrites – and this already happens when the bottle is taken out of the refrigerator and opened before it has reached room temperature – the nitrites decompose within a short time and then smell like rotten eggs or similar.
Some flavours contain small ceramic balls (power pellets) that can bind the smallest traces of water and thus keep the content pure and fresh. The differences in strength between the various brands are not very great. Many of our customers swear by the original RUSH® PWD.
Do not use cheaply produced “house brands” (except from trustworthy shops) or plagiarisms from other popper shops and your own experimental mixtures! Only original sealed branded goods are guaranteed to be clean and pure! Look out for the ® and ™ marks. Clean and fresh poppers have a faint, pleasant aromatic or fruity smell!
