What is a cane (BDSM)?

A cane is a stick made from materials such as reed, rattan (cane) or bamboo. It can be used as a walking aid or a striking tool. Until the 20th century, canes were used by teachers in Europe for corporal punishment. Nowadays, they are still used in some correctional centres, but are mainly known in the BDSM field.

Cane canes have a diameter of 0.5 to 1.0 cm and are therefore thin and flexible. Their length is around 60 to 80 cm, which makes them comparable to whips. A special variant are cane whips, which consist of several thin canes and resemble a rod.

What is a cane used for?

BDSM newbies may think that the cane is an old-school punishment, but using a cane in an impact play scene is an amazing tool and can leave phenomenal marks! First, play safe! Cane canes can cause cuts, so don’t use porous canes with more than one partner. They are mainly used for corporal punishment or punishment. Favourite body parts are the buttocks, back and the soles of the hands and feet. In the BDSM game “English education”, the cane is a standard tool for corporal punishment.

Although a cane looks inconspicuous, it causes intense pain, which is all the stronger, the thinner the cane is. Even with little effort, the strokes can leave significant marks. After a spanking session, sitting can still be painful days later or remind you of the experience. With a cane whip, the force is spread over a larger area and the pain is less intense. Make sure the strokes are parallel to each other (as crossed injuries can be more serious) and never strike near the tail bone, kidneys, face or neck. Always check your stick for splinters or other sharp parts. Clean your equipment thoroughly and make sure you have a first aid kit with you just in case.

Types of poles

The greater the stiffness (rigidity), weight and diameter of the pole, the greater the pain and impact on the skin. The lighter, longer and more flexible the stick, the stronger the sting.

Sticks made from natural fibres

They are porous and are therefore not suitable for sharing!

Rattan

  • Flexible and light
  • Can be very stinging!
  • Wrapped rattan sticks covered in leather can increase the sting even more
  • They often have a natural slight bend

Bamboo

  • Often mistaken for rattan
  • When dry, it can break and splinter, so not ideal for beginners
  • When it breaks, it often breaks lengthwise and leaves very sharp edges, so keep it moist

Reed

  • Similar to rattan, but without joints and usually not varnished
  • Extremely narrow, which causes severe stinging
  • Leaves impressive streaks on the floors!

Synthetic fibres

These materials can instil a lot of fear, especially if your subordinate hears the hiss when you swing them without hitting him!

Glass fibres

  • Usually white and often opaque
  • Lightweight and relatively easy to control
  • Slightly less flexible than some other (natural) materials, so the impact can be painful and deep

Lucite

  • Completely transparent and available in a variety of colours
  • Very stiff, with a hard impact
  • Tends to break on sharp edges
  • For experienced caners

Plastic

  • Relatively flexible and easy to control
  • Ideal for beginners so you can perfect your aim
  • Smooth and firm
  • Creates a nice, cutting sound in the air as it moves towards the “sweet spot” and lands with a sting

Delrin

  • Hard as rubber and heavy
  • Very bumpy
  • Much harder than rattan
  • Only for extreme players

Carbon fibre

  • Less flexible than rattan
  • Very deep stitches
  • Frequent breakages due to its stiffness,
  • Electrically conductive, so why not add voltage to your game?

Techniques

Cane canes are particularly popular with lovers of harder BDSM practices. Blows with the cane can quickly cause severe welts or even cause the skin to burst open. Due to the severe pain and risk of injury, only very experienced users should carry out this type of punishment. Even then, always start moderately and increase the intensity slowly. Everyone feels pain differently.

The way in which a Dom/Top strikes the skin determines the sensation felt by the submissive. This can be a stingy smack if you lift the cane just before impact, or a dull smack if you press down and hold the cane after impact. Another option is to bounce the cane off the skin or angle it to graze and sting the skin.

Cane strokes can be used on parts of the body such as the buttocks, thighs and back. Particular care should be taken with the female breast and the soles of the hands and feet, and anatomical knowledge should be acquired beforehand. Implants require special care. Impacts on joints and the kidney area should always be avoided.

Stinging and impact

There are two sensations associated with the cane: stinging and thudding. Cane canes are usually a toy that causes a sting, but some stiffer or heavier canes can also cause a violent thud. This technique, as the name suggests, means you alternate between the two, meaning you can deliver a few quick stinging blows followed by a few harder strokes. Not only does this give the submissive a break when one of the sensations becomes too much, but it also keeps him on his toes and ensures he never becomes complacent.

Frightening hissing

Oh my goodness! That eerily exciting, sadistically satisfying sound of something slicing through the air. This can be particularly satisfying. Just move the cane quickly through the air, making slicing noises to create anticipation and fear in your submissive.

Surprise!

Tap your wrists quickly and gently in a steady rhythm on your chosen ‘sweet spot’. The strokes should be soft and gentle, just hard enough to prick the skin. Once the submissive has settled into these gentle strokes, you can tap a little harder. You’ll notice that he’ll tense up at first and then fall back into the rhythm. Continue with the rhythm, but add a hard stroke! Continue with the gentle taps and next time startle them with two hard taps and so on. Gradually build it up so that each tap becomes a hard hit.

Float back down

The submissive is likely to be in subspace during your caning, so how you bring them back to reality is very important. When it’s time to end the scene, or you’re ready to move on to bigger and better things, try to find a way to include him by asking him to choose a number between one and twenty to indicate how many more strokes he’s going to feel. Or simply tell him how many spanks are left, or have the submissive signal to you when he is ready to stop. This helps the submissive to understand emotionally that the caning or punishment is almost over.

Care and storage of the cane

For health and safety reasons, never use porous canes with multiple partners. Canes need to be cleaned thoroughly after each use, especially if you use them on more than one bottom. Try spraying them with a disinfectant or sterilising them with alcohol swabs.

Canes made of rattan, bamboo and reed are natural materials and therefore need a little more care to prevent them from drying out and breaking. To help them retain their moisture, you can either soak them in salt water or steam them regularly. If you don’t do this, they can become dry and brittle and break on impact. A stick that breaks on a subordinate’s body can cause a painful injury.

Keep your canes either hanging or suspended, rather than lying down or in a bag. Also, avoid storing them in a way that can damage the tip. You can even hang rattan canes or canes made from other natural fibres in the bathroom to soak up some of the moisture.

What should you consider when buying?

There are basically three types of cane: peeled, unpeeled and covered. Peeled canes are made from the core of the rattan cane and have a slightly rough surface, which makes them susceptible to dirt. They are very flexible and cause intense pain. Unpeeled canes have a smooth surface and are less susceptible to dirt. They are less flexible and cause a rather dull pain. Cane canes covered with plastic or leather are flexible, easy to clean and less likely to break. However, they should not come into contact with water.
