Poppers” – perhaps you’ve heard of them before, but are unsure when, where and how to use them. Or you may be one of those who have little or no idea about it. Don’t worry, this article is just the thing for you! We want to help you fill in the gaps in your knowledge and provide you with comprehensive information about poppers. But before we go into detail about the benefits and application,

Poppers are a liquid made from chemicals in the alkyl nitrite family. The most common types are amyl nitrite, butyl nitrite, isoamyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite, some of which are offered with flavourings. The nitrites used or the different combinations of nitrites can differ. What they have in common is a pleasure-enhancing effect. As these nitrites have a chemical scent, many products are also combined with fragrances so that they can also be used as room fragrances. And the different nitrites sometimes also provide slightly varying effects during use – so boredom is guaranteed to be a thing of the past. Poppers fall under the category of inhalants and have often been used as tranquillisers as they can slow down the transmission of messages between the brain and body.

This can cause an interesting high, which can have a vasodilating effect in the body, which can lead to relaxation of the muscles. This in turn can lower blood pressure, which can make poppers a popular vasodilator. Nevertheless, it is important to note that there are risks associated with the use of poppers. In the following, we want to tell you about the safest possible use – AND – you can order poppers for use completely legally in our gay shop.

Poppers: What is that actually?

Amyl nitrite was first synthesised in 1844 by the chemist Antoine-Jérôme Balard. Over the following decades, doctors increasingly recognised the vasodilatory properties of amyl nitrite and its potential applications. As a result, it became a common treatment for heart disease, obstetric complications, angina pectoris (chest pain) and even cyanide poisoning, before eventually being replaced by more modern vasodilators such as nitroglycerin.

In case you’ve ever wondered, the name “poppers“: In the early 20th century, patients were given tin cans filled with glass ampoules of amyl nitrite and wrapped in cloth. During an attack of angina pectoris, they broke the capsules, allowing the amyl nitrite to be absorbed by the cloth and inhaled. The characteristic sound of the breaking glass gave this substance the name “poppers“.

Use and what to consider

Substances can have different effects on a person’s mental state, depending on their mental state and the environment they are in. This concept is often referred to as ‘set’ and ‘setting’.

“Set” refers to a person’s mental state, including their previous experiences with psychoactive drugs and their expectations. For example, feelings of happiness, sadness or anger may be heightened when someone drinks alcohol, while cannabis use may heighten feelings of anxiety.

“Setting” refers to the environment in which a person consumes substances. This includes aspects such as the familiarity of the environment, the presence of familiar people, the location (indoors or outdoors) and the type of music and lighting. Consuming psychoactive substances in a quiet and relaxed environment can lead to a different experience than in a noisy and crowded place. With alkyl nitrites, the substance affects each person differently, depending on various factors:

  • Height, weight and state of health
  • Habituation to the substance
  • Taking other medications/substances at the same time
  • Amount of the substance taken
  • Strength of the substance
  • Environment in which the substance is consumed
  • Amount of fresh air inhaled during inhalation
  • Level of physical activity before and after ingestion.

Characteristics

When poppers are opened at room temperature, they vaporise and their scent can be inhaled, which the human body converts into nitric oxide and can cause a high. This can increase your horniness, lower the inhibition threshold and intensify the feeling of orgasm. Nitric oxide relaxes and dilates the blood vessels, which leads to a reduction in blood pressure. Due to the relaxing effect on the sphincter muscle (anus), poppers can make penetration or dilation easier, for example during anal sex, with dildos or fisting. The vapour from poppers quickly enters the bloodstream via the mouth, throat and lungs. This creates an intense but short-term effect that lasts for 2–5 minutes.

Men who consume poppers report an increased sense of well-being and increased sexual desire. The high from poppers can lead to a feeling of warmth, dizziness, palpitations and reddening of the face and body. It also greatly reduces inhibitions, reduces the sensation of pain, increases the sensation of touch and increases sexual desire.

The high produced by poppers is often described as dizzyingly euphoric, and is often accompanied by feelings of warmth and sometimes a throbbing sensation in the head. The substance can also cause reddening of the skin. However, some men have reported having difficulty getting or maintaining an erection when using it. This effect includes:

  • An initial state of euphoria or intoxication
  • Reddening of the face
  • Increased heart rate
  • Dizziness
  • Warming sensations
  • Feelings of sexual arousal
  • Involuntary relaxation of the muscles, especially the sphincter in the anus and vagina

Handling

The vapour from poppers can be inhaled directly from the bottle through the nose or mouth. However, it is important to note that contact of the liquid with the skin can cause a rash. Special care should be taken if the edge of the bottle touches the nose or lips when inhaling the vapour. Some men prefer to pour a small amount of the liquid onto a cloth, cotton wool or paper and transfer it to another sealable container. The vapour is then inhaled from this container. This procedure reduces the risk of accidental skin contact with the liquid.

Do’s

  • Use poppers in small doses and take care to avoid skin contact with the liquid.
  • Inhale poppers carefully and sit or lie comfortably.
  • Keep the lid of the bottle closed to prevent the liquid from evaporating quickly.
  • Avoid holding other things in your hand while using poppers to prevent possible accidents.

Dont’s

  • Men with low blood pressure and heart problems should be careful and avoid poppers
  • Poppers can make you prone to fainting
  • It is important not to consume alcohol and not to combine poppers with other substances
  • Never take poppers orally.
  • Combining poppers with Viagra can cause a dangerous or even life-threatening drop in blood pressure
  • Poppers should not be combined with GHB, as both substances can affect oxygen uptake
  • Poppers are highly flammable and should therefore be used away from open flames or heat sources
  • Combining poppers with XTC or speed can damage blood vessels
  • It is important to avoid direct contact of poppers with skin, nasal mucosa or eyes

Sexual enhancers (Viagra®, Cialis®, Levitra®, Spedra®) and poppers are extremely dangerous!

  • The drop in blood pressure caused by both substances can lead to a drop in blood pressure with the possible consequence of circulatory collapse or even a heart attack. Dizziness and nitrite-induced headaches may occur.

Side effects

A common side effect of poppers is the occurrence of headaches. Reddening of the face and neck can also occur as well. Some men report nausea after consumption, and some may experience dizziness or fainting. It is important to note that poppers can cause chemical burns if the liquid comes into contact with the skin, and should therefore be washed off immediately. The application of poppers to the skin can cause irritation and burns, but these usually subside after a few days. Contact with the eyes can be extremely painful and requires immediate rinsing with plenty of water. If the symptoms persist, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Common side effects and risks of poppers consumption are:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness, especially when standing up from a lying or sitting position
  • Rapid pulse
  • Redness in the face and neck area
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Restlessness
  • Headache
  • Low blood pressure
  • Slowed breathing
  • Skin irritation
  • Blurred vision
  • Nosebleeds
  • Palpitations
  • Anaemia/anaemia
  • Brain damage
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Fainting
  • Eye problems (as poppers can increase pressure on the eyes)

Harm reduction and care in the poppers use

Although the risks of consuming poppers are low for healthy people, there are still risks to be aware of. An overdose, for example, can lead to methaemoglobinaemia. This is a conversion of haemoglobin, which normally transports oxygen in the blood, into methaemoglobin, which binds the oxygen but does not release it to the body’s cells. Severe methaemoglobinaemia can lead to oxygen deficiency, organ failure, blindness, brain damage and, in the most severe cases, even death. Overdose can occur through accidental ingestion or inhalation of large quantities. However, it is important to note that overdose of alkyl nitrites is rare, suggesting that an overdose risk may be unlikely with normal use.

If you regularly sniff large amounts of a popper and experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, lack of energy, fatigue and a bluish skin colour, this could indicate methaemoglobinaemia and immediate medical attention should be sought. If someone swallows poppers, an ambulance should be called and hospitalised immediately. In addition to the risks of poisoning, swallowing poppers can also cause throat irritation, nausea and vomiting.

Tips:

  • wipe the rim with a handkerchief or similar beforehand so that the nostrils are not filled with the residue of the poppers.
  • change the nostrils between each inhalation
  • Do not use old poppers
  • stop if you have a headache and breathe plenty of fresh air
  • open windows
  • highly flammable, so keep away from fire
