Lube Guide – Which gel do I use for which sex practice and which toy?

5 Min. Lesezeit

You’ve never used lube? Try it, because lube is a must for pain-free pleasure during every sex game! High-quality lube not only relieves pain and makes penetration of the anus easier in the beginning, but also enables optimal gliding during anal intercourse. But not all lubes are the same, which is why we have written this lube guide for gay men.

Why you should try lube

If you thought a little friction was normal in a relationship, it is, but not in terms of hot sex. Here are the reasons, in our lube guide, why using lubricating gel during sex is a good idea:

1.     Sex is marathon, not sprint

Admittedly, some people are not only totally quick with food, but also with sex. But good sex is often not a sprint, but a marathon in which you are active for a long time. To prevent the intimate area from drying out during persistent anal sex (which it does after a certain time), a lubricant gel is necessary. It not only moisturises, but also increases the sensitivity of the intimate area and also enhances lubrication.

2.     Reduce pain

After anal intercourse, friction naturally occurs and if it becomes too strong, it can be very uncomfortable and cause pain to both partners. Finally, not only is the anus sensitive, but so is the penis. In addition, there is also frictional heat, which can promote the growth of pathogens. The main purpose of lubricant is to make the surfaces smooth and slippery for a long time. This reduces friction and allows the cock to penetrate the anus of the sex partner without any problems or pain.

3.     Lubricant as an “intensifier” for sensations

Whoever has been rubbed with lube knows how strong the sensation was. Lubricants act as a feeling enhancer, many report that every kiss, lick and caress is even more intense. The reason for this is the thin film of moisture that is created on the (mucous) skin when lubricant is used, making it even more sensitive to any form of touching.

4.     Getting a taste

Today’s lubes come in different flavours. That’s right, you can get a strawberry, cherry or vanilla flavour during oral sex. This can also help you to overcome many a tasteful turn-off during oral sex, or spice up bland oral play with a new flavour. Such flavoured lubricants are completely safe from a health point of view, and you can put the lubricant in your mouth with a clear conscience. Simply rinse your mouth out afterwards. Lubricants can also be warmed up for a more pleasant feeling on the skin, and some even have a warming effect on their own.

5.     Lubricant for exciting “water play”

Persistent sex games in the shower, bathtub, watersports or hot tub are popular. Contrary to popular belief, however, staying in the water for too long dries out the body. For this reason, lubricant should also be used in the water. For this purpose, there are silicone- or oil-based lubricants, which are not water-based. They maintain their lubricating properties even in water and guarantee pleasurable sex play under the rain shower or between the stimulating bubbles of a whirlpool.

Critical substances in lubes: To my skin I let only …

Most people are very careful about what they eat and drink. They try to keep toxins away from themselves to protect their health. The same care should be taken in choosing your lubricating gels. They are mainly applied to the skin, but it has been proven that about 60 per cent of the substances you apply to your skin enter your bloodstream.

An example of unhealthy and also dangerous substances are parabens. Experts not only associate them with cancer. In addition, there are at least indications that they may be responsible for the reduction of sperm count and thus ultimately for reproductive problems. In addition, parabens are capable of causing allergic reactions or skin irritation.

Glycerin should also be viewed critically. It can increase the risk of yeast infection (although mainly in women). Glycerine in high concentrations (30 per cent or more) can also dry out the mucous membranes, which increases the risk of infection. When buying lube, make sure it does not contain parabens or too much glycerine.

Testing lube: good is just good enough

Before using lube, it makes sense to test how good it is. To do this, you can take a little bit of lube between your thumb and forefinger and rub it in. This not only allows you to check whether the texture is what you want, but also how quickly the lubricant is absorbed or dries. You can also find out how often you need to reapply during sex play. You can test whether the lubricant is suitable for oral sex and is edible, so to speak, by rubbing a little on the inside of your lower lip. This will quickly reveal any allergic reactions, and you will also know what flavour the lubricant has.

To make sure that the lubricant is suitable for oral sex and that it is edible, so to speak.

To ensure that the lubricant is at the right temperature during sex, you can rub it into the palm of your hand, warm it to body temperature and then moisten the relevant areas with it. This prevents cold shock. If sex toys are used, these should also be rubbed in generously.

Lube Guide: The different types and when to use them

There are four types of lube that are most commonly used. These are water-based lubricants, silicone-based lubricants, oil-based lubricants and hybrid lubricants. A fifth, less frequently used variant is sterile lubricant gel. It is mainly used by those who like to go deeper.

Lube Guide: Use gel during sex games

Finally, here are a few tips on which lube you should use during which types of sex.

Lube for electro sex

For electro sex, there is a special electro sex gel. This is characterised by a higher salt content and increased conductivity. For anal fisting, a silicone or oil-based lubricant is recommended, and if you’re into urethral sounding, use a sterile water-based lubricant.

Lube for anal sex

For the often practised anal sex, use a silicone- or oil-based lubricant. But then you have to remember that with oil-based lube, it is difficult to use condoms. With TasP, PrEP and monogamous couples, bareback is also possible. If you need to use lube during oral sex, a water-based one is the best choice.

Lube for masturbation and with sex toys

All types of lube are suitable for masturbation. When using sex toys, the best option is a water-based lube. A silicone-based lube is only an option if the toy is not made of silicone!

Good luck, and enjoy.
