Storing poppers correctly

To keep the aroma fresh, store the bottles cool and dark, ideally in the fridge, and seal them tightly after every use. Keep them tightly closed, out of reach of children and away from food and drinks. The main enemy is oxygen: every opening lets the contents react with air. A change of colour or scent shows that a bottle is past its point.

Safety: side effects and combinations

Poppers can briefly cause dizziness, head pressure, a fast pulse or a drop in circulation up to fainting; have any change in your vision checked by a doctor. The risk is higher with glaucoma or cardiovascular disease, and swallowing the liquid can cause life-threatening methaemoglobinaemia. Headaches, like the dizziness and head pressure mentioned above, are a result of the rapid drop in blood pressure and a warning sign. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice. Three rules matter: never swallow, keep the liquid away from skin, eyes and mouth, and never combine poppers with ED medication (PDE-5 inhibitors) or nitrates, because the drop in blood pressure can be fatal.
